Robert Ivy: One Of The Greatest Finds In The Architectural World

As a practicing civil engineer today, I can truly respect the work of architects whom I have had the pleasure of working with throughout my professional career. In the civil engineering world, they can be looked upon as being aesthetically oriented professionals which is unfair bias for the profession.

In this writing, we will recap two articles about one such notable architect named Robert Ivy who has influenced the architectural practice for the benefit of the profession. We will specifically look at Robert’s achievement of being awarded the Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award.

According to a June 2018 article by, Robert Ivy will be receiving the above-named award that has been awarded to many notable figures including actor Morgan Freeman and entertainer Leontyne Price. The award is given to Mississippi natives who have shown a lifetime of supporting a unique art form in their profession. Robert Ivy is no stranger to the architecture world as he is currently the CEO and EVP of the AIA, which is one of the highest ranks in the profession. The article also states that Robert is an accomplished writer for the practice and has published a biography title “Fay Jones, Architect” and has also served as editor-in-chief of “Architectural World” which is published by McGraw Hill Company. The subject article notes that Robert has also received the notable title of Master Architect from his affiliation with Alpha Rho Chi, the national fraternity for architects, and the Dean’s Medal from the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture.

In an April 2018 Tulane School of Architecture article, they noted that this was the first time that an architect received the prestigious award, which mainly recognizes Mississippi artists. The article quotes MIAL President Nancy LaForge giving high praise to Robert as she is quoted as saying: “As a writer, author and commentator on architecture worldwide, Ivy now takes his rightful place in an acclaimed list of Noel Polk Award honorees.”. Fellow AIA President Carl Elefante also gives Robert recognition by stating the award represents “…a crowning personal and professional achievement for him as a native of Mississippi…”.

Robert Ivy has also received a number of awards for his work in architecture including the Crain Award in 2009, which is regarded as a high achievement in American business media. Under his leadership with Architectural World, the journal received several Neal and Ozzie Awards.

Robert Ivy Honored By the Mississippi Institute Of Arts And Letters

The Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice President of the American Institute of Arts, Robert Ivy has been nominated as the winner of the Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award. The announcement was recently made by AIA current President, Carl Elefante. The award is being given by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters (MIAL). Mr. Ivy becomes the first Architect to receive such an award. The Noel Polk award is usually given to local artists and musicians from Mississippi accredited with exemplary work within the area.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the President of Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Nancy LaForge congratulated Robert Ivy and praised him for scooping the award. “I am proud that Robert Ivy received this award. He is the first architect to receive the Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award simply because of the wonderful work he is doing at the institution. I take this opportunity to congratulate him and encourage him to continue with his good work” said LaForge. She also said that Robert Ivy had convinced MIAL that he is more concerned about the well-being of the people of Mississippi and beyond.

On his part, AIA President Carl Elefante said that Robert Ivy deserves the award considering the work he has been doing especially after being appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the institution according to He added that Robert Ivy had brought in numerous changes which have helped in uplifting the status of the institution. He encouraged Mr. Robert Ivy to continue with the great work of transforming the American Institute of Architects.

Mr. Robert Ivy was the Chief Editor at the Architectural Record before being appointed as the CEO of the American Institute of Architects. He has also received several awards such as being named the Master architect by the architect’s fraternity, the Dean’s golden award from Tulane University School of Architecture among others. He was appointed as the CEO back in 2011 but had served as a board member of AIA since 1992.

Robert Ivy joins a growing list of famous Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award recipients such as writers Eudora Welty and Shelby Foote, actor Morgan Freeman, singer Leontyne Price and artist Walter Anderson. He will receive the award mid this year alongside another artist from Mississippi.

Robert Ivy went to Sewanee University where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in English before proceeding to Tulane University where he earned his Master of Architecture degree.
