There is nothing more accurate than the fact that Israel only wants peace. The pressure emanating from other sections of the world only serve to fester our wounds. It is as Daniel Taub, the former Israeli ambassador to the UK sees it.
After four years as an ambassador, he stands to attest to the progress achieved in enhancing the bilateral cooperation between the two nations. However, the sad part is that the only thing Britain does to bring order in the Middle East is to put pressure on Israel.
Well, the pressure only serves to tighten the strings. The situation is better explained by the north winds that blow against a traveler and still fail to blow the cloak off. However, the sun succeeds by warming the environment till the traveler takes the cloak off.
Like the wind, pressure aimed at forcing the hand of Israel have failed. Israeli people have responded by re-electing the government. Israel step towards peace only comes when the world becomes receptive to its fears and concerns.
Daniel Taub says that peace treaties work when assurances get honored. The deal with Egypt came after the United States guaranteed security and oil supply. Deployment of UN forces in Southern Lebanon led to the withdrawal of Israelis just to mention but a few. Progress towards lasting peace has stalled.
However, it not because peace is not desired by the people of Israel, but because there’s skepticism in the ability of the international community to fulfill their assurances. The UN peacekeepers have failed to prevent the re-arming of Hezbollah. The smuggling of weapons is still taking place, and the international community has been unable to honor their aid pledges.
With that in mind, nothing stands against Lebanon, Gaza, and other regions from becoming launch pads for missiles against Israel. Worse of all, these locations are in the vicinity of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
Undoubtedly, the region is facing tectonic changes. The ungoverned spaces have been taken over by jihadists and extremists. However, the same mentality of the international community remains.
According to Daniel Taub, Israel is embracing opportunities with different regions in which they have never worked with till now. Still, the peace debate in the international community gets conducted as if Israel and Palestine exist in space.
Valuing the Sun rather than the wind allows people to see the reality as it is. Honored treaties show how constructive engagement can bear fruits. Therefore, it’s only wise to understand that finding solutions in the Middle East cannot be found by brute force. As Daniel Taub says, it only serves to add more resistance.
